MACULAR DEGENERATION

Macular Degeneration is also known as Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD or AMD). This disease occurs when the state of the macula gets worse or when the central portion of the retina gets poor. This disease blurs the sharp, central vision that you need for “straight-ahead” activities like reading, sewing, seeing faces, and driving. It affects the macula that is a small yellowish area on the side to the center of the retina which is made up of cones and plays a key role in visual insight and has the fovea as its center. People of age 50 and older than 50 suffer the most and it damages their vision.

THREE TYPES OF MACULAR DEGENERATION:

1) Dry Macular Degeneration

2) Wet Macular Degeneration

3) Stargardt disease, It is a form of MD found in young people.

SYMPTOMS:

Distorted vision, blurred vision, loss in contrast sensitivity, slow recovery of visual function after exposure to bright light, visual acuity drastically decreasing, trouble to recognize colors, etc.

CAUSES:

Specific causes of this condition are not known but it includes both heredity and environment. Causes are different for people of different ages. The Genetic cause can also be there in the case of Stargardt disease. ADM involves both genetic and environmental factors.

TREATMENT:

There is no certain cure for early AMD but you can know about the condition after examination all you can do to reduce the risk of getting low vision is dieting, exercising, quit smoking, protecting your eyes from ultra-violet rays, eat nutritious foods. In Advanced AMD, photodynamic therapy and laser surgery are the treatments.
