HOW SMOKING HARMS YOUR EYES

Smoking is the largest cause of diseases and premature death in India. It harms almost every organ in the human body including one’s eyes. Everybody is familiar with the fact that the health effects of cigarette smoking are heart disease and cancer but sight-threatening vision and eye problems generally are less well-known.

Shree Eye-Care Dehradun, the best eye care hospital in Dehradun has always tried its best to make people aware of the reasons for quitting smoking as soon as possible. Some of the most common eye diseases can be prevented if you quit smoking and drinking.

  • Smoking and Cataract-

A cataract is basically clouding of the eye’s natural lens. It is a leading cause of blindness in the world. More than 60 percent of Indians are suffering from cataract or have had cataract surgery by the age of 80. Smoking and drinking are such kinds of bad habits that increase the risk of developing cataracts compared with non-smokers. It has been scientifically proven by researchers that people who smoke double their chances of forming a cataract and their risk increases more as they smoke more.

  • Smoking and Macular Degeneration-

We have talked about the age-related macular degeneration in our previous blogs. This disease affects the center of the retina. The retina is responsible for the sharp central vision which is highly needed while reading, driving, and while doing everyday tasks. Studies show that smokers have a three-fold increase in the risk of developing AMD compared with non-smokers. Apart from this, female smokers over the age of 80 years are five times more likely to develop AMD as compared to those who never smoked. It’s high time that people take care of their eyes and have a healthy diet rather than choosing to smoke and drink as this improves not only the eyesight but also improves the overall health of the person.

  • Smoking and Uveitis-

Uveitis is an inflammation of the eye’s middle layer or uvea and it is a serious eye disease that often results in complete vision loss. It harms the vital structure of an eye including iris and retina.  This leads to complications such as Retina Detachment, Cataract, and Glaucoma. Studies show that chain smokers are associated with four times greater than normal risk of having the condition.

  • Smoking and Dry eyes-

Smokers are more likely to go blind in old age in this case. Dry eye syndrome creates the problem of having insufficient tears on the eye’s surface which are needed to keep the eye lubricated and healthy. The Patient of dry eye will have red eyes, itchiness, and a “foreign body” sensation and even watery eyes. A regular habit of eating Tabacco, smoking, and drinking get you nowhere but to this eye disease.

  • Smoking and Infant Eye Disease-

Women who smoke regularly during pregnancy transmit dangerous toxins and harm the unborn child. This increases the chance of many fetal and eye disorders including other serious health problems in small babies and kids. Strabismus means crossed eyes and underdevelopment of the optic nerve is the leading cause of blindness in children. Premature babies take birth if pregnant women smoke.

It is never too late to quit smoking and choose a healthier lifestyle, a healthier diet, and a healthier body. We recommend you and help you on your journey to a smoke-free life.
